Gracity collaborated with Fundación Juan XXIII and Plantae to install IoT sensors in a vertical garden at the CIEC (Centro de Innovación en Economía Circular). The project combines social inclusion, urban greening and real-time data monitoring of humidity, temperature and water use.
The social + environmental impact of the garden
The vertical garden installed at the Centro de Innovación en Economía Circular (CIEC) in Madrid, developed by Fundación Juan XXIII, beautifully combines social inclusion with environmental restoration. Maintained by people with intellectual disabilities as part of their socio-laboral integration program, the garden improves air quality, reduces local temperature and creates a productive green space in an urban setting. It serves as a living laboratory for circular economy principles while generating meaningful employment and training opportunities.
How Gracity’s sensors provide verifiable data
Gracity installed IoT humidity and environmental sensors throughout the vertical garden in collaboration with Plantae. These sensors deliver continuous, granular data on soil moisture, temperature and microclimate conditions. Unlike traditional one-time assessments, our system provides real-time, comparable metrics that track the garden’s performance over time, from water efficiency to cooling effects, turning qualitative green initiatives into quantifiable climate intelligence.
Benefits for ESG reporting and urban resilience
The verifiable data generated by Gracity enables accurate ESG reporting and supports compliance with frameworks such as CSRD and EU Taxonomy. For Fundación Juan XXIII and the CIEC, this means they can demonstrate tangible environmental and social impact with audit-ready Evidence Packs. On a broader scale, the project strengthens urban resilience by providing municipalities with reliable insights to optimize green infrastructure and scale similar inclusive nature-based solutions across the city.
